Thunder Model’s LRDG F30 Wireless Truck kit represents one of the lesser-seen yet vital variants used by the Long Range Desert Group during WWII. This 1/35 scale model recreates the Canadian Ford F30 converted for radio communication duties, complete with covered rear bodywork, internal radio fittings, and stowage unique to LRDG patrols. Designed for long-range missions deep in enemy-held desert, wireless trucks served as the nerve centre of each patrol, keeping units in touch with HQ and each other over vast distances.

The Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) relied on highly mobile, self-sufficient vehicles for extended reconnaissance and raiding missions in North Africa. The wireless truck variant of the Ford F30 was specially converted to carry radio equipment essential for communicating with forward HQ and other patrols spread across vast desert landscapes. Covered with a canvas top to protect the radios from sand and sun, these vehicles were often unarmed or lightly armed and kept to the rear of the formation. Their crews required navigation and signals expertise, playing a crucial role in the LRDG’s success.
