At the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, Union infantry were rapidly organised into volunteer regiments, often clothed and equipped according to state contracts. By 1862, more standardised uniformstypically consisting of dark blue frock coats, sky blue trousers, and kepiswere in widespread use. These early-war Union soldiers fought in some of the wars formative battles, including First Bull Run, Fort Donelson, and the Seven Days Battles. Armed primarily with Springfield rifled muskets and supported by artillery and cavalry, Union infantry operated in linear formations, braving harsh terrain and evolving battlefield tactics. This set captures the appearance and spirit of the Northern soldier during the first crucial years of the Civil War.
