History:
The sack coat became the most commonly issued garment for Union infantry during the American Civil War, replacing the earlier frock coat for most field units. Issued throughout the conflict from 1861 to 1865, it was a simple, functional wool garment that offered practicality and ease of manufacture. Combined with sky blue trousers, kepis or forage caps, and the ubiquitous Springfield rifled musket, the appearance of the Union soldier became more standardised as the war progressed. These troops fought in iconic battles across the Eastern and Western theatres, including Gettysburg, Antietam, Vicksburg, and Atlanta. This set accurately represents the look of the common Union infantryman, equipped for long marches, entrenched warfare, and line-of-battle engagements across four brutal years of war.
