History:
The Mahdist Ansar, drawn from various Sudanese tribes, formed the core of the Mahdist army during the revolt against Egyptian and British control from 1881 to 1885. Led by Muhammad Ahmad, the self-proclaimed Mahdi, these warriors were motivated by religious fervour and a desire for independence. Armed with spears, swords, and captured rifles, and often clad in distinctive jibbah tunics, the Ansar used massed infantry tactics to overwhelm colonial forces. They achieved notable victories at El Obeid and Khartoum before ultimately being defeated by the Anglo-Egyptian army. This set captures the diversity, determination, and cultural richness of the Mahdist forces during a pivotal moment in 19th-century colonial history.
