History
The Grumman TBF Avenger was the US Navy’s primary torpedo bomber during World War II. Renowned for its ruggedness and large payload capacity, the Avenger played a crucial role in several key battles. At the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944 — the largest naval battle in history — Avengers launched from carriers such as USS Enterprise, USS Intrepid, and USS San Jacinto delivered decisive strikes against the Japanese fleet. This campaign not only highlighted the Avenger’s effectiveness but also cemented carrier-based aviation as the dominant force in naval warfare. Among the pilots was future US President George H. W. Bush, who flew an Avenger from USS San Jacinto. The TBF-1C variant featured improved armament and equipment, making it one of the most formidable naval aircraft of its time.
