History
The Douglas C-118 Liftmaster was the military adaptation of the DC-6, developed in the post-WWII era to meet the growing demand for long-range transport aircraft. Entering service with the US Air Force and US Navy in the early 1950s, the Liftmaster was employed for personnel transport, cargo delivery, and VIP duties. It served throughout the 1960s and 70s, often operating alongside the C-124 Globemaster and later supplanted by jet-powered transports such as the C-141 Starlifter. Known for its reliability and range, the C-118 bridged the transition between piston-engined airlifters and the jet age, representing a key element of Cold War air mobility. Some remained in service into the early 1980s before being retired from frontline USAF operations.
