History:
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat entered service with the US Navy in the early 1970s as a fleet defence fighter designed to intercept Soviet bombers and cruise missiles. Equipped with the powerful AWG-9 radar and capable of firing long-range AIM-54 Phoenix missiles, the Tomcat set a new standard for naval aviation. The F-14A was the first production variant, featuring Pratt & Whitney TF30 engines and serving extensively throughout the Cold War, including during operations in the Gulf of Sidra and the Iran-Iraq War with exported versions. The aircraft achieved lasting fame through its role in the film “Top Gun,” becoming a cultural icon. Although retired from US Navy service in 2006, the Tomcat remains one of the most recognisable and celebrated fighter aircraft in history.
