History:
The Grumman F6F Hellcat was introduced in 1943 to replace the F4F Wildcat and immediately proved superior to its Japanese counterparts, including the A6M Zero. The F6F-3 was the initial combat version, while the F6F-5 introduced refinements such as improved armour, upgraded engine, and revised canopy. Rugged, powerful, and heavily armed with six .50 calibre machine guns, the Hellcat achieved an extraordinary kill-to-loss ratio, destroying more than 5,000 enemy aircraft. Operating from US Navy carriers, it became the most successful naval fighter of the war, playing a decisive role in battles such as the Marianas Turkey Shoot and the Battle of the Philippine Sea.
