History:
The Flakpanzer IV “Wirbelwind” was developed by Germany in 1944 to counter increasing Allied air superiority. Using the chassis of the Panzer IV, engineers mounted a nine-sided open-top turret housing the 2cm Flakvierling 38 quadruple autocannon. This configuration provided excellent short-range firepower against low-flying aircraft and could also be employed effectively against infantry and lightly armoured vehicles. Approximately 100 vehicles were produced, serving primarily on the Western and Eastern Fronts during the late stages of WWII. Though limited in numbers, the Wirbelwind represented Germany’s attempts to adapt existing tank platforms to the growing need for mobile air defence.
