History
The KF-21 Boramae is South Korea’s most ambitious indigenous fighter programme to date, designed to replace ageing F-4 Phantom and F-5 Freedom Fighter aircraft. Developed by KAI in partnership with Indonesian industry, the KF-21 is a 4.5-generation multirole fighter that incorporates stealth-inspired shaping, advanced radar, and precision strike capability. Its first flight took place in July 2022, marking a significant milestone in South Korea’s growing aerospace sector. The aircraft is expected to form the backbone of the ROKAF’s tactical fighter force through the 2030s, with potential export opportunities to allied nations. The Boramae (“Young Hawk”) reflects South Korea’s increasing self-reliance in defence technology and its determination to field a modern, capable, and versatile combat aircraft.
