History
The M1 Abrams series entered US Army service in 1980 as a third-generation main battle tank, designed to counter the most advanced threats of the Cold War. The M1A1 variant introduced an improved 120mm M256 smoothbore gun, enhanced armour, and modernised systems, greatly increasing its lethality and survivability. The Abrams proved itself in combat during the Gulf War in 1991, where it outperformed Iraqi armour, and has since served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond. The US Marine Corps employed the M1A1 until 2021, while other nations, including Egypt, Australia, and most recently Poland, have also adopted the type. Its combination of firepower, armour, and mobility has made the Abrams one of the most successful tanks of the modern era, and upgrades ensure it remains in frontline service well into the future.
