History:
The M60A2 Patton was developed in the early 1970s as part of the US Army’s attempt to integrate advanced technology into its tank fleet. Nicknamed the “Starship,” it featured a 152mm gun/launcher capable of firing both conventional rounds and the MGM-51 Shillelagh guided missile. Despite its innovative design, the M60A2 suffered from reliability issues and complex maintenance, leading to its relatively short service life. Deployed mainly with US armoured units in Europe, it served as an interim solution until the arrival of more capable designs like the M1 Abrams. Today, the M60A2 remains a fascinating example of Cold War armoured experimentation.
