History:
The Merkava Mk.II entered service in the early 1980s as an evolution of Israel’s indigenous main battle tank design. Built upon the combat experience of the Yom Kippur War, it incorporated heavier armour, improved fire control, and enhanced crew survivability features. The Mk.IID variant introduced modular composite armour, allowing damaged sections to be replaced quickly in the field. Its front-engine layout, a hallmark of the Merkava series, maximised protection for the crew while offering additional space in the rear for infantry transport. The tank saw action in Lebanon during the 1980s and 1990s and remains a significant milestone in Israel’s military vehicle development.
