History:
The MiG-29 Fulcrum, introduced in the early 1980s, was the Soviet Union’s answer to advanced NATO fighters such as the F-16 and F/A-18. Renowned for its agility, twin-engine power, and superior manoeuvrability, the MiG-29 became a cornerstone of Warsaw Pact air defence. After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, Slovakia inherited a number of MiG-29s, which were later upgraded to the MiG-29AS standard with NATO-compatible avionics and navigation systems. These aircraft provided Slovakia with a capable multi-role fighter, bridging the gap between Cold War heritage and modern alliance requirements. The Slovak MiG-29AS has seen extensive service within NATO exercises and continues to symbolise the country’s air defence legacy.
