History:
The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the heaviest and most powerful single-engine fighters of World War II. The P-47D variant, powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, became the most widely produced model, excelling in both air-to-air combat and ground-attack roles. ‘Eileen,’ a P-47D-28-RA flown by Lt. Frank Oiler of the 362nd Fighter Group, 379th Fighter Squadron, became well known for its distinctive nose art and combat service over Europe in 1944. With its heavy armament of eight .50 calibre machine guns and ability to carry bombs and rockets, the Thunderbolt played a vital role in achieving Allied air superiority and providing devastating close air support, cementing its place as one of the most effective fighters of the war.
