History
The Lockheed PV-1 Patrol Bomber was the naval version of the Ventura, adapted for maritime operations by the US Navy during World War II. Powered by twin Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engines, the PV-1 combined speed and endurance, making it well-suited for long-range reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare. The type was introduced in 1942 and quickly entered service in the Pacific theatre, conducting patrols, strikes against shipping, and bombing missions on Japanese-held islands. PV-1s also operated in the Atlantic on convoy escort and anti-submarine duties. The aircraft saw combat throughout the Solomons, Marianas, and Aleutians, and its versatility allowed it to serve in a variety of roles, from bombing to training. Internationally, Venturas and their derivatives also served with the RAF and Soviet Air Force. By 1945, the PV-1 had played a significant part in securing Allied dominance at sea and in the air, cementing its place in US Navy aviation history.
