History:
The North American B-25 Mitchell was one of the most successful medium bombers of the Second World War. Named in honour of Brigadier General Billy Mitchell, it gained fame with the Doolittle Raid of 1942 and went on to serve on every front. Through the Lend-Lease programme, the RAF received B-25C and D variants, designated Mitchell I and II, which served with squadrons in the 2nd Tactical Air Force. Operating primarily from bases in Britain, these aircraft were tasked with low-level bombing and ground attack missions across occupied Europe, playing a crucial role in the lead-up to and during the Normandy campaign. The Mitchell’s rugged construction, adaptability, and range made it a valued asset for Allied air forces throughout the war.
