History
Roman warships were a vital element in the expansion and dominance of the Roman Empire, ensuring control over the Mediterranean, often referred to as “Mare Nostrum” or “Our Sea.” Based on earlier Greek and Carthaginian designs, Roman ships combined speed, ramming capability, and marine infantry to create formidable naval forces. Vessels such as the bireme and trireme employed multiple banks of oars and square sails to balance speed with endurance, while marines onboard could engage in close combat once the ships grappled. Naval supremacy enabled Rome to protect trade routes, suppress piracy, and expand its influence across Europe, North Africa, and the Near East. These ships remain emblematic of Rome’s military and maritime power in antiquity.
