History:
NASA’s Shuttle Carrier Aircraft programme utilised two heavily modified Boeing 747s to ferry orbiters during the Space Shuttle era. Beginning in the late 1970s, these aircraft were instrumental in transporting shuttles for testing and operational deployment, particularly when landings occurred far from Kennedy Space Center. The sight of a massive 747 flying with the Space Shuttle secured on its back became one of the most recognisable symbols of the space age. These flights represented the ingenuity and logistical effort required to sustain America’s reusable space programme.
