History:
The Sukhoi Su-22, known by its NATO reporting name “Fitter,” was a variable-geometry fighter-bomber developed from the Su-17. Entering service in the 1970s, it became one of the most widely exported Soviet aircraft, serving with air forces across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Its swing-wing design allowed improved performance at both low and high speeds, making it versatile for strike, reconnaissance, and interdiction missions. The Su-22 saw extensive service in conflicts such as the Iran-Iraq War, the Soviet-Afghan War, and later regional conflicts, demonstrating durability and effectiveness. Even today, some air forces continue to operate upgraded versions of the Su-22.
