History:
The Grumman TBF Avenger entered service in 1942 as the US Navy’s primary torpedo bomber, replacing the ageing TBD Devastator. Rugged, versatile, and heavily armed, the Avenger was capable of carrying torpedoes, bombs, and depth charges, making it suitable for both naval strike and anti-submarine operations. It gained fame during the Battle of Midway, where its first combat missions were flown despite heavy losses. As the war progressed, the Avenger became one of the most effective carrier-based strike aircraft of the Pacific Theatre, contributing to victories at Guadalcanal, Leyte Gulf, and Okinawa. It also achieved lasting recognition as the aircraft flown by future US President George H. W. Bush during his service as a Navy pilot.
