History:
The Grumman TBM Avenger was one of the most effective torpedo bombers of WWII, serving with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps from 1942 onward. First entering combat during the Battle of Midway, the Avenger quickly established itself as a reliable and powerful carrier-based aircraft. The TBM-3 variant, built by General Motors under license, featured improved engines and equipment, making it the most widely produced version. The USS Bunker Hill operated Avengers during key Pacific campaigns, where they carried out torpedo attacks, level bombing, and anti-submarine patrols. With a crew of three and the ability to carry a wide range of ordnance, the Avenger became a cornerstone of U.S. carrier aviation. Academy’s 1/48 TBM-3 kit in Bunker Hill markings offers an accurate and detailed representation of this legendary aircraft.
