History:
The Hawker Typhoon entered service in 1941 as a high-speed interceptor but soon found its niche as a formidable ground-attack aircraft. Equipped with four 20mm Hispano cannons and capable of carrying bombs and rockets, the Typhoon became one of the most effective weapons against German armour and transport during the Allied push into Europe. Despite early reliability problems, the Typhoon’s powerful Napier Sabre engine gave it exceptional low-altitude performance. It played a decisive role in operations following D-Day, particularly in disrupting German reinforcements and armour in Normandy. The Typhoon remains a symbol of the RAF’s close air support capability during the later stages of WWII.
