History:
The USS Indianapolis (CA-35), a Portland-class heavy cruiser, was commissioned in 1932 and became one of the most renowned ships of the U.S. Navy. Serving throughout the Second World War, she played a crucial role in the Pacific, providing bombardment support and acting as flagship for Admiral Raymond Spruance. In July 1945, Indianapolis completed a top-secret mission delivering parts of the atomic bomb “Little Boy” to Tinian Island. Shortly afterwards, on 30 July 1945, she was sunk by Japanese submarine I-58 in one of the Navy’s greatest tragedies. Of nearly 1,200 crew, only 316 survived after enduring days adrift at sea. Her story remains a symbol of both heroism and sacrifice in naval history.
