History
Commissioned in 1937, the USS Yorktown CV-5 was the lead ship of her class and became one of the most celebrated carriers of World War II. After seeing action in the Atlantic, Yorktown was transferred to the Pacific, where she fought in the Coral Sea and played a decisive role at Midway in June 1942. Despite suffering heavy damage, her air wing helped deliver crippling blows to the Japanese fleet, contributing to the sinking of multiple enemy carriers. Yorktown herself was fatally damaged during the battle and sank on 7 June 1942, but her sacrifice and that of her crew marked a turning point in the Pacific War. Known as the “Fighting Lady,” Yorktown remains a symbol of courage and resilience in naval history.
