History: Built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge with the approval of King Richard II, Bodiam Castle was intended to defend East Sussex from potential French invasion during the Hundred Years’ War. Its design emphasised both defence and grandeur, with chambers built into the curtain walls and towers marking the corners and main entrance. The Dalyngrigge family occupied the castle until their lineage ended, after which it passed to the Lewknor family. Following the English Civil War, Bodiam was partially dismantled and fell into ruin until restoration work began in the 19th century. Lord Curzon completed further restoration before donating it to the National Trust in 1925, ensuring its preservation as a national treasure and popular visitor attraction.
