History: The original Eilean Donan Castle was constructed in the early 13th century to defend against Viking incursions. It became a stronghold of the Mackenzies of Kintail and, from 1511, was guarded by the Macraes as hereditary Constables. In 1719, Spanish forces supporting the Jacobite cause occupied the castle, which was later destroyed by Royal Navy bombardment. Restored between 1919 and 1932 by Lt. Col. John MacRae-Gilstrap, the castle now features an arched stone bridge and remains the seat of Clan Macrae. Notable for its rare left-handed spiral staircase, the castle is a popular tourist attraction, wedding venue, and filming location, symbolising Scotland’s rich heritage and resilience.
