History
Located in Huairou County, about 70 km northeast of Beijing, the Mutianyu section links Juyongguan Pass in the west with Gubeikou Gateway in the east. Originally constructed in the mid-6th century during the Qin Dynasty, it was later rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty under General Xu Da, using high-quality granite bricks to create a durable defensive barrier. The 1509 reconstruction produced one of the best-preserved and most impressive sections of the Great Wall, standing 7–8 metres high and 4–5 metres wide.
Spanning 2,250 metres, this section includes 22 watchtowers, with the central tower being the largest, and distinctive battlements on both sides for dual-direction defence. Today, the Mutianyu section remains a popular tourist destination, admired for its historical significance and striking mountain scenery.
