History
Rooted in the late Romanesque period and refined in the early Gothic era, Guimaraes Castle is deeply connected to the birth of Portugal. In the late 11th century, Count D. Henrique expanded and remodelled the fortress, replacing earlier structures and adding new entrances. From 1139, it served as the royal residence when Portugal became an independent nation. The Battle of São Mamede in 1128, fought nearby, played a pivotal role in securing Portuguese independence.
King Denis’s renovations in the late 13th and early 14th centuries gave the castle much of its present form. Declared a national monument in 1910, it was restored from 1937 under the General Service for National Buildings and Monuments. Since 1992, it has been owned by the Instituto Português do Património Arquitetónico. Situated atop a granite hill and surrounded by a forest park, Guimaraes Castle remains a symbol of Portuguese heritage.
