British Royal Navy F-35B Lightning II “809 NAS” STOVL Strike Fighter (1/72)
The F-35B Lightning II is a fifth generation, multi role stealth fighter designed for short take off and vertical landing (STOVL), enabling operations from aircraft carriers and short airstrips. Developed by Lockheed Martin under the Joint Strike Fighter programme, the F-35B incorporates advanced sensors, networked data sharing, and low observability, providing a decisive edge in modern combat. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney F135 engine, it is capable of missions including air superiority, ground attack, and intelligence gathering.
The Royal Air Force and Royal Navy were among the first international partners in the F-35 programme, enhancing UK air power alongside the RAF’s Eurofighter Typhoon. British F-35Bs entered service with RAF Marham’s 617 Squadron (Dambusters) in 2018, integrating into joint carrier operations with the Royal Navy aboard Queen Elizabeth class carriers.
On 6 December 2023, RAF Marham hosted the Commissioning Parade for 809 Naval Air Squadron, marking its reactivation to operate the F-35B. Known as the “Immortals”, 809 NAS was first formed in 1941 and served with distinction, including during the Falklands War. As part of the UK’s carrier strike capability, 809 NAS joins 617 Squadron in operating the F-35B, increasing the nation’s ability to deploy seaborne stealth fighters in support of NATO and allied operations.
