Airfix Plastic Model Kit
Airfix Space Shuttle Gift Set (1/144) A50200
One of the most awe-inspiring feats of modern engineering, the NASA Space Shuttle remains a symbol of human ambition and technological achievement. Developed after the success of the Apollo programme, the Space Shuttle represented a shift towards a reusable orbital transport system that could support frequent missions to low Earth orbit. With its distinctive orbiter, external fuel tank, and twin solid rocket boosters, the Shuttle launch became an iconic event for a generation.
To function successfully, the Space Shuttle relied on the flawless coordination of over a million individual components. Despite the enormous complexity, the programme achieved remarkable success over three decades, launching five orbiters into space. Of these, the Shuttle ‘Discovery’ became the most flown, completing 39 missions and accumulating a full year in space—an enduring legacy of NASA’s commitment to exploration and scientific progress.
This 1/144 scale Airfix gift set captures the striking form of the Space Shuttle in launch configuration. With detailed parts, decals, and paints included, it’s a perfect kit for space enthusiasts and modellers inspired by the marvels of spaceflight.

History:
Following the achievements of the Apollo missions, NASA set out to develop a reusable spacecraft capable of ferrying astronauts and cargo into space. The result was the Space Shuttle, a groundbreaking system introduced in 1981. Its partially reusable design included a winged orbiter that returned to Earth like an aircraft. Over 30 years, five orbiters were built, conducting over 130 missions. ‘Discovery’ stood out as the fleet’s workhorse, participating in historic missions including satellite deployments, space station servicing, and scientific experiments. The Shuttle programme not only expanded human presence in space but also laid the foundation for the International Space Station and future exploration missions.
