Airfix Plastic Model Kit
Airfix Vosper M.T.B (1/72) A05280V
In the face of evolving naval threats during the Second World War, the Royal Navy recognised the urgent need for fast, agile attack vessels capable of harassing enemy shipping and engaging larger warships. The solution came in the form of the Motor Torpedo Boat (MTB), and few were more successful than those produced by the Vosper company. Building on experience gained since the 1930s, Vosper’s 73ft M.T.B. became a formidable asset in coastal and open-water operations.
Powered by three high-performance Packard engines, this variant of the Vosper MTB could reach speeds exceeding 40 knots. Its armament was equally impressive for a vessel of its size—featuring four 18-inch torpedo tubes, a 20mm Oerlikon cannon, and up to four Vickers machine guns. The combination of speed, stealth, and firepower made these boats lethal opponents and invaluable tools in disrupting enemy supply lines.
This 1/72 scale model from Airfix accurately represents the later-version Vosper M.T.B., capturing the sleek lines and well-armed deck configuration in fine detail. Ideal for naval enthusiasts and WWII modellers, the kit offers a dynamic and historically important subject for display.

History:
Originally designed to challenge enemy naval superiority, the Vosper 73ft Motor Torpedo Boat was a fast and heavily armed vessel developed to strike quickly and retreat before facing serious retaliation. These boats were typically deployed in squadrons, launching night-time attacks on enemy convoys, harbours, and patrol vessels. Their lightweight hulls and powerful engines gave them exceptional manoeuvrability, while their torpedoes and cannons packed a significant punch. The Vosper M.T.B.s became symbols of the Royal Navy’s ingenuity and adaptability during WWII, playing a vital role in coastal defence and offensive operations throughout European waters.
