History:
The Mazda AZ-1 was launched in 1992 as part of Japan’s kei sports car era, joining the ranks of the Honda Beat and Suzuki Cappuccino. Produced by Suzuki and sold under Mazda’s Autozam sub-brand, the AZ-1 stood out with its mid-engine layout, lightweight chassis, and iconic gullwing doors. Powered by a 657cc turbocharged three-cylinder engine, it delivered lively performance while remaining within kei car regulations. Mazdaspeed, Mazda’s in-house tuning division, offered a special version of the AZ-1 with aerodynamic enhancements, sportier styling, and performance tweaks, making the already unique car even more distinctive. Despite limited production numbers, the AZ-1 became a cult classic thanks to its futuristic design and driving excitement. Today, the Mazdaspeed AZ-1 is one of the rarest and most sought-after kei cars, celebrated for its bold design and its place in Japan’s golden age of compact sports cars.
