History:
The Kawanishi N1K1-Ja Shiden, or “Violet Lightning,” entered service in 1943 as one of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s most capable land-based fighters. Derived from the N1K Kyofu floatplane, the Shiden featured a powerful 1,990 hp Nakajima Homare radial engine and heavy armament, including four 20mm cannons. Its mid-wing layout, however, created handling difficulties during takeoff and landing, leading to later refinements in the N1K2-J variant. Despite its quirks, the Shiden proved formidable in combat, able to challenge Allied aircraft such as the F6F Hellcat and F4U Corsair on relatively equal terms. It gained particular respect for its manoeuvrability and firepower, qualities that allowed Japanese pilots to score notable victories late in the war. The Type 11 variant marked the beginning of this fighter’s combat career, cementing its place as one of Japan’s most advanced piston-engine aircraft of World War II.
