History:
The Hawker Sea Hurricane MK Ib was introduced in 1941 as a solution to the RAF’s need for carrier-based air defence. While early Sea Hurricanes were launched from Catapult Armed Merchantmen (CAM ships), the MK Ib featured structural reinforcements and arrestor gear to enable landing on fleet carriers. Operating in harsh North Atlantic and Arctic convoy routes, these aircraft were instrumental in defending merchant vessels from enemy bombers and reconnaissance planes. Their service paved the way for later purpose-built naval fighters in the Fleet Air Arm.
