History:
The Kongo was the lead ship of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Kongo-class battlecruisers, later upgraded to fast battleships. Originally designed in Britain and built in 1911, Kongo underwent several major refits, enhancing her armour, firepower, and speed. By the Second World War, she served as a core part of the Japanese fleet, providing vital support in the Pacific theatre. She participated in numerous operations, including the battles of Midway, Guadalcanal, and Leyte Gulf. Known for her powerful main battery of eight 14-inch guns and high speed, Kongo was both a symbol of Japan’s naval ambitions and a formidable warship in combat. Ultimately sunk in November 1944 by the U.S. Navy submarine USS Sealion, she remains one of the most iconic capital ships of the IJN fleet.
