History:
Introduced in 1916, the Nieuport XXI was a development of the successful Nieuport 17, retaining the lightweight sesquiplane layout but optimised for training and secondary frontline roles. In Russian service, these agile fighters were used for both combat and advanced pilot instruction. Their light handling and reasonable performance made them well-suited to the vast Eastern Front, where they flew reconnaissance, escort, and occasional dogfighting missions. Though quickly outclassed by newer designs, the Nieuport XXI played an important role in strengthening Russia’s aviation capabilities during the war.
