History:
Introduced in 1917, the Nieuport XXIII was designed to maintain the manoeuvrability of its predecessors while incorporating minor improvements in controls and armament placement. In RFC service, these nimble fighters were employed for both offensive patrols and air-to-air engagements over the Western Front. Pilots valued their quick climbing ability and agility, though they had to remain cautious of the lower wing’s vulnerability in high-speed dives. Despite being succeeded by more robust aircraft, the Nieuport XXIII played a key role in maintaining Allied air power during a critical phase of the war.
