History
Introduced in late 1917, the Sopwith 5F.1 Dolphin was designed to counter the German high-altitude fighter threat during WWI. Its unusual negative-stagger wing arrangement provided excellent upward visibility, allowing pilots to better track enemy aircraft above. Powered by a Hispano-Suiza V8 engine, the Dolphin achieved strong performance at higher altitudes and became a capable escort and patrol fighter. Despite initial pilot concerns about head protection, it proved to be a successful design in combat, serving with several Royal Air Force squadrons until the war’s end. Its combination of speed, manoeuvrability, and visibility made it a valued asset in the final year of the war, and it remains a fascinating subject for modellers and historians alike.
