History:
The M19 Twin 40mm Gun Motor Carriage was developed late in World War II to provide mobile anti-aircraft protection for advancing U.S. forces. Entering service in 1944, it mounted two 40mm Bofors guns on an open turret placed on a modified M24 light tank chassis. While intended primarily for air defence, the M19 proved equally effective in ground-support roles, where its high rate of fire made it a valuable asset against infantry and lightly armoured targets. It saw combat in Europe during the final stages of the war and later in Korea, where its versatility was once again demonstrated. Though eventually replaced by newer systems, the M19 remains a notable example of American ingenuity in self-propelled anti-aircraft design.
