History:
HMS Coventry (D118) was commissioned in 1978 as part of the Batch I series of Type 42 guided missile destroyers. Designed around the Sea Dart missile system, Coventry provided critical air defence for Royal Navy task groups. The ship gained lasting historical significance during the Falklands War in 1982, where it served valiantly before being lost in action on 25 May after sustaining bomb hits during an air attack. Despite her loss, Coventry’s service highlighted the importance of modern missile destroyers in fleet defence and underscored the bravery of her crew. The Type 42 class went on to serve as the backbone of Royal Navy destroyer forces for decades, until replaced by the Type 45 class in the 2000s.
