History:
The HMS Sheffield (D80) was the lead ship of the Type 42 guided missile destroyer class, commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1975. Designed primarily for air defence, it was equipped with the Sea Dart missile system alongside radar and gunnery systems to protect task forces from aerial threats. The Sheffield gained lasting historical significance during the Falklands War in 1982, where it tragically became the first British warship lost in action since World War II after being struck by an Exocet missile. Despite its loss, the Type 42 destroyer class went on to serve the Royal Navy for decades, providing crucial fleet protection and evolving through successive Batches. The HMS Sheffield remains a symbol of both modern naval warfare and the sacrifices of the Royal Navy.
