History:
The Matilda Mk.I, or Infantry Tank A11, was developed in the 1930s as Britain’s answer to the need for an armoured vehicle capable of supporting infantry on the battlefield. Though lightly armed with a single machine gun, it was heavily armoured for its time and could resist most contemporary anti-tank weapons. The A11 Type I variant marked one of the earliest steps in Britain’s armoured warfare doctrine. While its performance in combat was quickly outpaced by newer designs, it played a formative role during the early stages of World War II, particularly during the Battle of France. Its robust design and purpose-built philosophy laid the groundwork for later infantry tanks.
