History:
During the Second World War, the beaches of Normandy were heavily fortified by the German Wehrmacht in anticipation of an Allied invasion. Among the many defences installed along the Atlantic Wall were steel hedgehog obstacles — large, cross-shaped constructions made from steel beams or angle iron, designed to impede landing craft and slow armoured vehicles during beach assaults.
These hedgehogs proved effective in disrupting the initial advance of Allied forces during the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944. Positioned across the tidal zone, they were often paired with mines or other traps to maximise damage. Their stark, utilitarian design became one of the defining visual elements of the Normandy beaches and remains a common feature in WWII dioramas and historical depictions. This set from Gecko Models allows modellers to accurately represent this crucial aspect of coastal fortification with precision and realism.
