History:
The early PR (Photo Reconnaissance) Spitfires of the Cotton Club were among the first aircraft adapted for unarmed intelligence-gathering missions over enemy territory. Under the direction of Sidney Cotton, a maverick aviator with a flair for innovation, modified Spitfires began clandestine operations over Europe just before the outbreak of World War II. These aircraft featured extended fuel capacity, smoothed-over gun ports, and distinctive pale blue or grey camouflage for high-altitude concealment. Flying solo and unarmed, they relied on speed and altitude to avoid interception. The success of these early PR missions paved the way for a formalised photo-reconnaissance branch within the RAF and cemented the Spitfire’s place not just as a fighter, but as a vital tool in strategic intelligence. This kit from IBG Models commemorates these early heroes of the air with accurate tooling and historic markings.
