History:
Malta’s location in the heart of the Mediterranean made it a vital strategic base during World War II, enabling the Allies to disrupt Axis supply lines to North Africa. In June 1940, soon after Italy’s entry into the war, Malta came under heavy aerial assault by the Regia Aeronautica. Among the attacking aircraft was the Fiat CR.42 Falco, Italy’s primary fighter at the time and the last biplane fighter produced in large numbers. Opposing them were a handful of Gloster Sea Gladiator Mk.II aircraft, adapted naval fighters flown from land bases. Despite being obsolete by 1940, the Gladiators became legendary for their role in the defence of Malta, where their resilience and the bravery of their pilots earned them lasting fame. The aerial duels between the nimble Italian biplanes and the outnumbered British fighters marked the beginning of a prolonged struggle for control of the skies above Malta, a campaign that would shape the course of the Mediterranean war.
