History: The Northrop F-5E Tiger II was developed as an evolution of the earlier F-5A Freedom Fighter, designed to offer excellent performance in a compact and cost-effective airframe. Entering service in the early 1970s, the F-5E featured improved avionics, a longer nose, and enhanced armament capabilities. It was widely adopted by U.S. allies and remains in limited service to this day. Its balanced handling characteristics and similarity to Soviet aircraft profiles also made it an ideal adversary aircraft in dissimilar air combat training (DACT) programs, notably used by the U.S. Navy’s Top Gun school and the USAF’s Aggressor Squadrons.
