History:
Developed by Vought in the late 1930s, the OS2U Kingfisher became the U.S. Navy’s standard observation floatplane throughout World War II. Its primary mission was to scout ahead for naval fleets, direct naval gunfire, and rescue downed pilots. The Kingfisher could be launched via catapult from battleships and cruisers and recovered after landing on water. Though relatively slow and lightly armed, it was a versatile and reliable aircraft that operated across the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. Notably, Kingfishers played a key role in the Pacific island-hopping campaigns, assisting in rescues and intelligence gathering across vast ocean areas.
