History:
The Handley Page Halifax was introduced into RAF service in 1940 as a long-range heavy bomber and quickly became a cornerstone of Bomber Command. The Mk.II variant improved performance with a redesigned nose and better defensive armament, while retaining the rugged airframe that made it suitable for a variety of roles. Alongside the Avro Lancaster and Short Stirling, the Halifax delivered the bulk of Britain’s strategic bombing offensive. In addition to bombing raids, Halifaxes also supported covert operations, dropping paratroopers and supplies into occupied Europe. By the end of the war, over 6,000 had been built, cementing its legacy as one of the RAF’s great wartime workhorses.
