History:
The Vought Corsair was one of the most iconic carrier-based fighters of World War II. While originally designed for the U.S. Navy, the aircraft was also adopted by the British Royal Navy under the Lend-Lease programme. Known as the Corsair Mk II in Fleet Air Arm service, these aircraft were modified with shorter wing tips to fit into British carrier hangars. By late 1944, Corsair squadrons were operating in both the Atlantic and Pacific, providing vital air support during operations against German and Japanese forces. Their rugged design, powerful engine, and versatility made the Corsair a favourite among naval aviators and a formidable opponent in combat. The British contribution helped refine the Corsair’s carrier handling, proving its worth as one of the premier naval fighters of the era.
